and american sniper author chris kyle and his friend at a texas gun range on saturday. a sheriff in texas says the shooter, also an iraqi war vet, may have been suffering from some sort of mental illness, perhaps ptsd, post-traumatic stress disorder. >> the suspect's mother, she may have reached out to mr. kyle to try and help her son. and we kind of have an idea that maybe that's why they were at the range, for some type of therapy. >> the suspect, eddie ray routh, is on suicide watch. he's held on $3 million bond facing two counts of capital murder. and now to the state department, where there will be an official welcoming ceremony today for the new -- for the agency's new chief. john kerry took over from hillary clinton on friday, taking the oath of office at a private ceremony with supreme court justice elena kagan officiating. the new stret of state then spent the weekend making phone calls to foreign ministers from

♪ welcome back, everybody. it's your first "skinny." people's favorite part of the show here. everyone's talking about all of the performances from the super bowl last night. >> yeah. >> so we should have a recap on that. and of course it started out with what i thought was a really tender, touching moment. jennifer hudson's there singing with the choir from sandy hook, of course the school that was involved in that just unthinkable massacre in december. as i thought not only did jennifer sound great, but the kids were adorable. they had on the green ribbons in honor of the 26 victims back there in that tragedy back on december 14th. she sounded great. you could tell the crowd just kind of gave it the solemn moment that it -- >> and look. there's little kids in the front. they were probably classmates with some of the kids. >> of course. of course. so in the midst of all the hype the nation needed a somber moment and they certainly delivered. >> that was a good one. >> then alicia keys, she got out there in the middle of the field on the piano and sang live, made sure to stress that because of beyonce at the inauguration.

>> electrifying. knocked it out of the part. incredible performance. that was a real performance. go on. >> well, diana said it. okay. now, look. then after that, of course, the most anticipated performance of the night, always the halftime show. particularly this year beyonce was there. i thought it was great. i thought the press comments where she sang the anthem killed all the critics. i thought last night was a great mix of dancing all her best hits. she brought destiny's child back out. she looked great as she always does. she owned the floor. i thought it was great. you have a different i.e. lesser opinion. >> i just happen to think that it was less than. i'll leave it at that. >> what about that were you not feeling? >> she didn't really sing the first song. >> she did not lip-sync. >> she didn't. but she sang three words out of it because it was all track. then she pushed her girls out of the way. turns out she brought her girls on as backup singers. i did not like that. then she pushed them out of the way because they were no longer of service to her. and it was just not -- and i understand everybody's going to

stopping the play dead in its tracks. >> it was a weird unprecedented moment. the break energized the niners apparently and they scored 17 points in less than five minutes, but the ravens, in the end they hang on and take the super bowl championship. final score 34-31. >> we have a team that no matter what the situation we're going to overcome it to the best of our ability. it's kind of fitting that we've won it like that today. >> i just knew with that -- with jim harbaugh being on the other sideline and all those years that we've been together that that game was going to be a dog fooitd right till the end. >> things were working in the first half. we just didn't finish our drives a couple of times and that was the difference in the game. >> and then battled right on the brink of winning it. and it was a heck of a football game. >> afterwards the coaches, the harbaugh brothers, met on the field. each saying how proud they were of the other. nice family moment there. but john of the ravens later

said it was one of the hardest things he ever -- that's got to be tough. your parents are there obviously rooting for both the coaches. you get to the height of your careers. coaching the super bowl. it had to be tough for whoever loss. but that was kind of a cool subplot to the night, that you had brother versus brother. >> and the dad actually in an interview with espn said he was worried about the cameras being focused on him because he didn't want his reaction to be misinterpreted as anything, whether it was a tear or being upset about a play. so the brother-in-law, who was also there and talking about it, said that everybody was watching without having any reaction. >> that's hard to watch. >> how do you watch -- even a person who's not really interested in the game watches and has a reaction. >> of course. yeah. >> it's like a punt throw thing. >> more expert analysis from diana perez coming up. it was a good night. new orleans did a good job. >> i agree. >> people love to party in new orleans. new orleans is actually tied with miami for the city that's hosted the most super bowls. both cities have done ten. so they're the most popular cities in the country for the big dance.

the suspect also an iraqi war vet apparently suffered from mental health issues and is now on suicide watch. with more on this here's abc's ryan owens. >> reporter: former navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle was such a good shot he once hit a target more than a mile away. but police say it was a bullet fired at point blank range that ended the life of the husband and father of two. >> i'm a better husband and father than i was a killer. >> reporter: the 38-year-old died at a place he should have felt comfortable. this gun range southwest of dallas. and detectives say he died at the hands of a young man he was trying to counsel. >> the suspect's mother, she may have reached out to mr. kyle to try and help her son. and we kind of have an idea that maybe that's why they were at the range, for some type of therapy. >> reporter: officers arrested this 25-year-old former marine, eddie ray routh, after a police chase saturday night. they say routh turned the gun on kyle and a friend, 35-year-old chad littlefield, murdering them

both. his family told them he was having trouble readjusting to life at home after years of war. that's something kyle spoke about frequently. >> you don't have an identity. you have to learn a whole new way to act. >> reporter: kyle volunteered to help vets suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder. he knew the stress of combat as well as anyone. he served four deployments, won seven medals of bravery, and killed more than 150 people. he was the deadliest sniper in u.s. military history. >> i loved the job. you know, the guys, the camaraderie. it came down to whether i had to choose them or my wife and kids. i couldn't have both anymore. because i'd already messed that up. so i chose the family. >> reporter: on the homefront kyle became a best-selling author. in his autobiography "american sniper" he talks about shooting so many iraqi insurgents they nicknamed him the devil and placed a $20,000 bounty on his head. to survive all of that, only to be killed here at home.

that young marine now faces two counts of capital murder -- one for each of the men who was trying to help him heal. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. here in new york today former mayor ed koch will be laid to rest. the unflappable mayor died friday at the age of 88. former president bill clinton will deliver a tribute at his funeral. the service will conclude with the song "new york, new york." and in a special tribute, his favorite subway station will be renamed after koch. the boy scouts could decide as early as this week whether to open its membership to gays. president obama, who serves as honorary president of the scouts, said he opposes the ex-exclusion of gays. the scouts' top leadership is meeting this week near dallas to discuss the issue more. and here's your monday forecast. snow showers in the dakotas. snow ending this morning in minneapolis, chicago, and detroit. snow later in the ohio valley, new jersey, and philly.

grew up in new jersey. first date. >> this is a good one. >> this is a good one. a little stranger than fiction at super bowl xlvii. this one it is the baltimore ravens who are celebrating victory over the frrnz. they got out to an early really commanding lead in this thing until that unexpected power failure in the dome. >> the niners threatened in the second half, but baltimore was able to hang on. and niners coach jim harbaugh congratulated his brother, ravens coach john harbaugh on the field. confusing. >> it's been all in the family down there in the dome last night. and that power failure in the superdome looked like it could change the outcome for a while. it all went down early in the third quarter. the scoreboard and some of the lights went dark. the team intercoms were down as well. so play stopped for about 34 minutes, making super bowl xlvii the longest ever. it took four hours and 14 minutes to finish. many football fans were not complaining, though. when it's the last game of the

year till september, you know. it was good. >> and as late as it was, hundreds of ravens fans still rushed into the streets of baltimore to celebrate their team's victory. pouring out of the bars where they'd been watching the game. they're somewhere dancing along with them. she did announce that the city will hold a parade in honor of its team on tuesday. and wow. look at that. well deserved. but man, that's a lot of people. >> that's a good -- you can imagine folks are probably still up in baltimore carrying on, acting a fool. as they should. >> you don't think they're watching now? >> if they do, they won't remember it. >> i won't remember tonight. >> it was a good game. it was a good game. >> it was. it was great. >> and congrats to my favorite city, new orleans, always doing a good job in hosting. so enjoy, baltimore. and stay tuned for more from the super bowl, including some post-game analysis and the commercial that cbs did not want you to see. we'll have all the angles covered all morning long right here on abc news.

and now to breaking news from southern california, where there's been a deadly bus crash. at least eight people were killed when the bus hit a pickup truck and a car. the accident happened on a rural mountain roadside about 80 miles east of los angeles. dozen of people were treated at the scene or taken to nearby hospitals. the bus was apparently returning to tijuana after a trip to big bear. and the california crash comes less than a day after a bus carrying 42 high school students and their chaperones slammed into a boston overpass. most of the injured have been released from the hospital, but one person is still in critical condition. the driver claims he was relying on gps at the time of the accident and didn't realize he wasn't supposed to be on that road. we turn to that tragic shooting of a former navy s.e.a.l. and his friend at a texas gun range. the shooting suspect has now been identified as an iraqi war vet named eddie ray routh. he's been held on two counts of capital murder. the "dallas morning news" reports that routh was hit with

a stun gun byards yesterday after he refused to return his meal tray. also a tense police standoff is entering day seven in alabama, with a gunman holding a 5-year-old little boy in an underground bunker. jimmy lee dykes is said to be making the child as comfortable as possible, allowing police to send down crackers, even a hot wheels car. we're told that dykes has demanded that a reporter be sent down to speak with him. meanwhile, funeral services were held yesterday for the school bus driver dykes is accused of shooting. you have to wonder the psyche of that little boy. seven days down there now. no end in sight. and according to some reports, that bunker is well stocked. this could drag on for weeks and weeks. >> the only thing that we worry about is the little boy and that he's being kept as comfortable as possible. that's all we can hope and pray for at this point. and the fact the police are asking us to prarks it's hard to take. police in turkey are questioning at least 11 suspects in the death of a woman who

vanished before she was returned to home. she suffered a fate'll blow to the head. she was seen on surveillance video walking through a mall. detectives are still trying to figure out why her passport and her cell phone were left behind in her hotel room. top leaders of the boy scouts could soon announce a decision on whether to lift a ban on gays. meetings begin today in texas. president obama, who is honorary chairman of the scouts, tells cbs news he is in favor of opening the scouts to all. >> a bus driver or a cop. can we close some of those loopholes -- my attitude is gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does. in every institution and walk of life. >> the president kicks off a major push on gun control later today when he travels to minneapolis department to continue to talk up that issue. police in pennsylvania are trying to figure out how a 6-year-old managed to take her mother's car out for a drive. they say the little girl

apparently wanted to visit her dad, who lives not too far away. rami hawkins was shoveling snow when he looked up to see the bmw coming right at him. and we're not going to hear from him. oh, maybe we are. >> i was like stop, stop, stop. she looked at me and she took back off and she stopped again. and i started running up the hill telling her to -- >> so anyway, before it was all over with, the child driver hit a parked car and a light pole. she was shaken up but she was not seriously hurt. and the whole deal here is that her parents are separated and she missed her dad and she wanted to go see him. and the gentleman that we kind of let you hear was basically the guy that saw this happen, ran after her, and tried to get her to stop. >> that's what i meant a second ago about the sweet motivation behind that story. just a girl who wanted to see her daddy. that's a tough one. but glad no one was injured. >> and she's in a heap of trouble. >> divorce always tends to be tough on the kids above all else.

and back to our top story now. last night's unforgettable super bowl. joining us now to talk more about the big game is sports radio host jason page. this was a good one and a unique one on a couple of different levels last night. the lights are on here, which is a good sign, i guess. >> expect the unexpected, right? >> and i give you props, man.

you called the ravens months ago. boom. you got it right. >> look, this was an outstanding game. the first question you have to ask is where were the 49ers in the first half? >> amen, yes. >> down 21-6 at the half. penalized early in this game. some uncharacteristic mistakes. on their first drive they get a holding penalty, called back a big play. then a big offsides on the ravens' opening drive enables them to get a touchdown instead of what would have potentially been a field goal. and right out of the gate you could see the 49ers just came out flat in this game. >> yeah. >> everybody's going to point to the play at the end of the game, which we'll get to, but it had a lot more to do with what happened in the first 30 minutes and 12 seconds of this game than it did the final four downs for the 49ers. >> also i think they just dug themselves too big a hole to get out of. they came close at the end but maybe it was a little too little too late? >> yeah. and it's too narrow thinking or too short-sighted to say one play decided this game. it wasn't one play that decided this game. it was many plays in this game that decide td for the 49ers. first of all, start with the 21-6 and you look at what the ravens are doing in this game, up 21-6 right out of halftime

you get jacoby jones. who would have seen this coming? 108 yards. first it was 109. then they decide td was 108 yards. takes it to the house. and zwlauthat just sends -- it d like a boxer. it looked like in a boxing match when a fighter just finally gets knocked out. and then what happened? he gets the power going out in the stadium. who could have seen this happening at the stadium? >> twitter and facebook were lighting up with light-filled jokes in new orleans. but it did change the momentum. >> there were like 350,000 tweets when the power went out. the lights still out. john harbaugh's lit because he can't figure out what's going on. the 49ers have been in this situation before. they come out after the power outage, they look like a completely different team. >> that's right. they found the lights. >> they did. they get back in this game, get themselves an opportunity late. a fourth down and goal from the 5 yard line. and the 49ers have their opportunity here. they're going to say that this is holding or this is pass interference. at the end of the day it's a good non-call. there's contact. the ball's overthrown.

they've done this before and maybe this is like their m.o. and this is how they get to drum up some attention by doing this kind of thing. doesn't matter. still very cool. >> exactly. >> if it works, yeah. >> i'm a big sodastream fan. so i think it's interesting. but behind the scenes of -- the money world behind the super bowl. interesting. >> so you know how twitter is riddled with grammar errors. right? well, there was an elementary -- yes, you does. there was an elementary school teacher in buffalo who decided to make this a lesson. she blew up a bunch of tweets. this one is from chris culliver. she gave it to her children and said to correct it. some of them weren't able to figure out what the player was saying. this one says "i pray to god i never dying broke." this one says "merry christmas to everyone. my god bless you all." of course this was supposed to be "may god bless you all." and here's one more. "it's true, i could be a lot better but with the football."

>> i'm not a huge fan. i thought there were other performances of the night that were much, much, much better. but first this. football's big night delivered big. super bowl xlvii kept fans in the game to the bitter end. but in the end it was the ravens who were the victors. >> that's right. both of us have on kind of ravenish, purplish, bluish, showing baltimore some love this morning. and of course the ravens' big win sent cheering fans back into baltimore, out onto the streets. happy their team hung on for the big victory and beat back the second-half assault from the 49ers. john harbaugh's ravens have won their second super bowl title. his brother jim congratulated him. ♪ america >> reporter: before the opening kickoff children from newtown, connecticut, scene of course of the sandy hook massacre, joined jennifer hudson singing "america the beautiful." ravens' first drive, joe flacco hits anquan boldin in the end zone, and they're on the board 7-0.

baltimore gave san fran a dose of its own medicine on defense, tackling colin kaepernick, recovering the niners' fumble. later ed reed picked off kaepernick, making him the first 49ers quarterback ever to be intercepted in a super bowl. and then tempers flared. ♪ beyonce sent the crowd into a frenzy with a performance that included a reunion with destiny's child. jacoby jones came back strong to open the second half with a 108-yard kickoff return for the td. ravens up 28-6. suddenly lights out. a power surge darkened half of the superdome, stopping the game. normally even-tempered john harbaugh is furious with the interruption in his team's momentum. when play resumes 34 minutes later, momentum shifts to the 49ers. they quickly scored 17 points and slashed the ravens' lead from 22 points to just 5. 28-33.

in the final two minutes the ravens put up a tough goal line defense to go home with the trophy. >> and nobody wants to see a blowout super bowl. all the hype and all the build-up. you don't want to see it get to the final game and have it be some kind of lopsided thing. >> no. >> it was so great to see the 49ers who i know you were rooting for -- >> i was. >> -- kind of roar back and make it a nail-biter of a game at the end. it was good. >> yeah. the entire thing was good because then we had the blackout in the middle of it. and what a lot of people were saying, a lot of the analysts were saying, is watch when we come back, the momentum's going to shift. >> and it did. >> and it did. >> big-time. >> and i was biting my nails and hoping for my 49ers. but eh. >> what makes you a 49ers fan, by the way? because you're from? >> i'm from new york. >> that's what i thought. >> i can't say because it's going to transparently show how little i know about football. >> you like the uniforms better, don't you? >> i prefer san francisco's -- >> oh! i can't believe it. oh! >> i'm embarrassed to say it. and my husband is probably, you know -- he's hating me right now. >> exactly.

>> these are grown men. they're well compensated. they know the risks that are involved. but as we start thinking about, you know, the pipeline, pop warner, high school, college, i want to make sure that we're doing everything we can to make the sport safer, and that means that the game probably going to evolve a little bit. >> the president also spoke for the first time about the new pentagon ruling allowing women at the front lines. mr. obama said for all practical matters women are already serving in combat and serving with extraordinary patriotism and distinction. and now to breaking news this morning from southern california where there has been a deadly bus crash. a tour bus apparently hit a pickup truck head on near the city of yucaipa in a remote area of san bernardino county. at least eight people were killed, dozens more hurt. the bus was returning to tijuana, mexico from big bear lake at the time of the accident. the crash happened on a mountainous stretch of highway. new details about the fatal shooting of former navy s.e.a.l.

and american sniper author chris kyle and his friend at a texas gun range on saturday. a sheriff in texas says the shooter, also an iraqi war vet, may have been suffering from some sort of mental illness, perhaps ptsd, post-traumatic stress disorder. >> the suspect's mother, she may have reached out to mr. kyle to try and help her son. and we kind of have an idea that maybe that's why they were at the range, for some type of therapy. >> the suspect, eddie ray routh, is on suicide watch. he's held on $3 million bond facing two counts of capital murder. and now to the state department, where there will be an official welcoming ceremony today for the new -- for the agency's new chief. john kerry took over from hillary clinton on friday, taking the oath of office at a private ceremony with supreme court justice elena kagan officiating. the new secretary of state then spent the weekend making phone calls to foreign ministers from around the world.

♪ skinny ♪ so skinny welcome back, everybody. it's your first "skinny." people's favorite part of the show here. so everyone's talking about all of the performances from the super bowl last night. >> yeah. >> so we should have a recap on that. and of course it started out with what i thought was a really tender, touching moment. jennifer hudson's there singing with the choir from sandy hook, of course the school that was involved in that just unthinkable massacre in december. as i thought not only did jennifer sound great, but the kids were adorable. they had on the green ribbons in honor of the 26 victims back there in that tragedy back on december 14th. she sounded great. you could tell the crowd just kind of gave it the solemn moment that it -- >> and look. there's little kids in the front. they were probably classmates with some of the kids. >> of course. of course. so in the midst of all the hype the nation needed a somber moment and they certainly delivered. >> that was a good one. >> then alicia keys, she got out there in the middle of the field on the piano and sang live, made sure to stress that in light of beyoncegate at the inauguration.

>> electrifying. knocked it out of the park. incredible performance. that was a real performance. go on. >> well, diana said it. okay. now, look. then after that, of course, the most anticipated performance of the night, always the halftime show. particularly this year beyonce was there. i thought it was great. i thought the press conference where she sang the anthem killed all the critics. i thought last night was a great mix of dancing, all her best hits. she brought destiny's child back out. she looked great as she always does. she owned the floor. i thought it was great. you have a different i.e. lesser opinion. >> i just happen to think that it was less than. i'll leave it at that. >> what about that were you not feeling? >> she didn't really sing the first song. >> she did not lip-sync. >> she didn't. but she sang three words out of it because it was all track. then she pushed her girls out of the way. then she -- turns out she brought her girls on as backup singers. i did not like that. then she pushed them out of the way because they were no longer of service to her. and it was just not -- and i understand everybody's going to hate me for saying this because there are so many beyonce
